Share the Music

Share the Music provides philanthropic support through instrument distribution to Unit 5, District 87, and Pratt Scholars

Share the Music was created in 2007 in response to the need for access to school band and orchestra instruments by disadvantaged students whose families could not afford to rent or buy an instrument. Currently, approximately 200 instruments are being used by students in area school bands and orchestras provided by funding from Share the Music.

From its inception, Share the Music was recognized by Illinois Symphony Orchestra, The Music Shoppe, and Pratt Music Foundation as a partner organization.

Share the Music conducts day to day operations through the staff of The Music Shoppe’s Normal location, which considers Share the Music to be part of its philanthropic mission to the local community. Staff assist students with the process of obtaining and maintaining their instrument.

Income for Share the Music comes from grants and individual donations. A  $20 participation fee is requested, but not required, from student’s families as a way to help defray the cost of repair and maintenance.  This fee is collected  from approximately 80-90% of participating families on average.

Share the Music overlaps with Pratt Music Foundation by providing instruments to students who have been awarded Pratt scholarships and  need an instrument.
